Understanding Pool Chemistry: Why Balance Matters

Pool water might look clean, but without proper chemistry, it can become harmful to swimmers and damaging to equipment. Let’s break down the basics of swimming pool chemistry.

pH Level

The pH measures how acidic or basic the water is.

  • Ideal Range: 7.2 to 7.6

  • Low pH = Acidic water, which corrodes metal parts and irritates skin

  • High pH = Cloudy water, scale buildup, and reduced chlorine effectiveness

Chlorine

Chlorine disinfects your pool and kills bacteria.

  • Ideal Range: 1–3 ppm

  • Too little = Bacteria and algae growth

  • Too much = Eye and skin irritation, strong smell

Alkalinity

Total Alkalinity helps stabilize pH.

  • Ideal Range: 80–120 ppm

  • Low = pH swings wildly

  • High = pH hard to adjust, cloudy water

Calcium Hardness

This prevents water from becoming too soft or too hard.

  • Ideal Range: 200–400 ppm

  • Low = Corrosion of surfaces

  • High = Scaling on walls and equipment

Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer)

Protects chlorine from UV rays.

  • Ideal Range: 30–50 ppm

  • Too much can reduce chlorine effectiveness

How to Maintain Balance

  • Test water 2–3 times a week

  • Use test kits or strips

  • Add chemicals slowly and retest after each treatment

  • Follow product guidelines carefully
